Ion Channel Assays

Ion Channels play a key role in physiology, but more importantly deficits in function or gain of function in channel activity are now known to be associated with several disease conditions, more commonly called channelopathies. Many drug discovery programs targeting specific channels require the need for selectivity testing to avoid unwanted effects.

Cardiac safety liability is also a major concern in the drug discovery process; blockade of the potassium channel coded for by the human Ether-a-go-go-Related Gene (hERG) is known to be arrhythmogenic. Whether it is screening for activity against a target of choice or trying to determine the safety liability or selectivity of compounds in a drug discovery program, electrophysiology platforms to directly assess ion channel function are the tools of choice.
