A PDE inhibitor blocks one or more of the five subtypes of the enzyme phosphodiesterase (PDE), thereby preventing the inactivation of the intracellular second messengers cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) by the respective PDE subtype(s). PDE inhibitors include: Caffeine, pentoxifylline - used to treat circulatory related indications, vinpocetine - used to treat cerebrovascular disorders, enoximone - for cardiac failure, ibudilast - a bronchodilator, and sildenafil - used for erectile disfunction. Other indications where PDE inhibitors are or may be of use include pulmonary hypertension, antipsychotics, COPD, rhinitis, renal pain, and diabetes.
